*******CHAMPIONS*********

Although the Yellows were crowned champions last week when their nearest challengers Ketton failed to win their game in hand, the Yellows put on a title winning performance for the last game of the season.

Playing without free scoring Harry Toon, the lads had to dig deep into their energy levels as Navenby played the game at a high tempo in the cold driving rain.

In an entertaining first 10mins, which the Yellows dominated, saw the Yellows force a number of corners in the first few minutes and both Max Hubbard and Joe Creasey had shots well saved, but the deadlock could not be broken.

The next period saw chances at both ends, but it was the Yellows that opened the scoring with Man of the match Ryan Taggart breaking up a promising Navenby move to play Luke Gorman into space, Luke then had time to play a perfect 20 yard ball for Max Hubbard to run on to and slot home.

Navenby responded well hitting the Yellows post before a lovely solo run by their number 3, beating four Yellows players before driving the ball into the net.

But the Yellows were the team that went in at half time ahead. Sam Brown robbed the ball off the Navenby midfield and played Max Hubbard in down the right wing, Max then whipped in an excellent cross which Sam Brown, who had continued his run, met on the volley only a few yards out.

The second half saw the Yellows start to pressure, as the Yellows midfield trio Sam, Luke and Joe started win the ball in midfield and create chances to extend the lead. The Yellows soon made it 3-1 when Navenby failed to deal with a quick long Luke throw which fell to Sam who made no mistake slotting the ball into the far corner with the keeper stranded.

Sam then turned provider with a quick thinking long throw-in to Joe Creasey, who unmarked, had time to unleash a ferocious drive from just outside the box, which the keeper could only palm on to the post on its way into the back of the net.

The Yellows now playing with confidence forced a series of corners, from one which Bradley Flower attempted a trade mark bullet from just over 30 yards that just whistled over the bar.

Navenby then had a good passage of play which Stefan Eardley had to produce a fine save with his feet to put a goal bound shot wide. Navenby continued to press in the last few minutes, but the Yellows held firm until the final whistle.

This signalled the start of celebrations from the team and parents, it was noted that it was the parents that seemed to celebrate for longer and louder!

This brought the end to an excellent first league season for the Yellows with 17 wins and over 100 goals scored, in which every player scored.

The Gonerby Blues gave the Yellows title hopes a blow, in an entertaining encounter on Sunday. With the Yellows nearest challengers Ketton winning at home the Yellows lead at the top has been cut to 4 points. The Yellows final game is away at Navenby, whilst Ketton play the Gonerby Reds & Barrowby.

Twice the Yellows led and both times the Blues fought back, until the Blues grabbed the winner early in the second half.

The Yellows dominated the game but were undone by some excellent Blues defending and 2 good Blues corners.

It was the Yellows that got off to the perfect start when Bradley Flower broke up an early Blues attack to fed man of the Man of the Match Joe Creasey, who’s long through ball sent Max Hubbard clear to shoot low into the far corner.

The Yellows led only lasted a few minutes when they failed to clear a good Blues corner and the Blues drew level as the loose ball was stabbed home.

The Yellows then piled on the pressure, with Sam Brown, Luke Gorman and Ryan Taggart all going close. Half way through the first half the Yellows pressure paid dividends as Max slotted home Joe’s spilled shot.

The Yellows then had their best period of play but the Blues held firm thanks to great goalkeeping, stern defending and the woodwork. Max and Luke had shots well saved and Joe smashed the ball on to the post from an inch perfect cross from Sam. The Blues weathered the storm and then caught the Yellows out with a quick counter attack which a fierce shot that was defected pass Stefan Eardley.

The second half saw the Blues Keeper in inspired form and twice Max was denied by goal line clearances. But it was the Blues that got the vital goal when a good Blues corner was turned into the net as the Yellows tried to clear.

With the clock ticking down the Yellows piled forward, but the Blues held firm to record an excellent victory and leave the Yellows needing to win their last game or hope that Ketton fail to get anything from their game in hand.

The Yellows eventually break the Reds resistance to record a priceless victory as their nearest challengers in the title race, Ketton can only draw against Botttesford.

Man of the match Max Hubbard rifled in his 40th goal of the season from Sam Brown’s neat lay off deep in the second half to hand the Yellows a victory that only requires them 1 more win from their final 2 games to clinch the title.

Both team’s had chances early on; Max Hubbard went close twice for the Yellows within the first few minutes and both Bradley Flower and Ryan Taggart made brave tackles to keep the Reds at bay. The Yellows again went close as a trade mark Luke Gorman in swinging corner caused panic in the Reds defence.

The game became scrappy as both teams tried to dominate the midfield, and chances became few and far between until late in the first half when the Yellows has 3 good chances to break the deadlock. Two Harry Toon pile drivers whistled passed the post and an excellent and run cross by Joe Creasey which Max only just failed to connect with at the far post.

The Reds started to dominate the second half and the Yellows had Stefan Eardley to thank early on as he made a couple of smart saves. The Yellows then lost influential midfielder Luke Gorman to injury and the Yellows looked stretched for a period.

But as the game entered into the final quarter the Yellows started use the width of the pitch and space started appearing.

Harry just missing the net with a great header from a lovely cross from Max, and then second half sub Sam Brown then linked well with Joe Creasey to provide a teasing cross which Harry only just failed to connect with.

Then with only 5 minutes remaining the Yellows settled the game, Harry burst down the left wing and fed Sam on the edge of the Reds penalty area, Sam’s pass put Max in space and Max made no mistake from just in side the box.

Both teams went close at the death, Stefan saving well at his far post and Joe Creasey hitting the woodwork after another good run and cross from Sam.

The Yellows hit the ‘100 goals in a season’ milestone in style with an 8 nil defeat of the hard working Long Bennington side in freezing wet conditions.

Man of the match Luke Gorman bossed the midfield from start to finish, and it was his in-swinging corner in the first few minutes which was met by a well timed back post run from Sam Brown who slammed the ball into the roof of the net.

Long Bennington responded well, but where caught out by when Max Hubbard latched on to Sam Brown’s long ball and beautifully steered in to the far corner. This brought up the 100 goal mark, fitting that Yellows top scorer Max Hubbard should get it.

The Yellows made it 3 with in 10 minutes, with Luke Gorman’s quick throw finding Sam Brown in enough space to try a long range shot that beat everyone to end up in the back of the net.

The Yellows continued to pressure and where unlucky not to go four up when a curling free-kick from Luke Gorman was palmed away for a corner by the alert Long Bennington keeper.

The visitors had a good passage of play just before half-time and good defending and goal keeping from Ryan Taggart and Stefan Eardley made sure the Yellows didn’t concede.

Long Bennington started the second half well and once again it was Luke Gorman in the thick of things with a goal line clearance which kept Long Bennington at bay.

The Yellows soon made it four, when Max Hubbard played Harry Toon in to the area and his left foot shoot buried its self in the far corner.

A moment of magic made it 5-0 as Luke Gorman’s cross found Bradley Flower in the final third, he then unleashed an unstoppable shot from all of 20 yards that smashed high into the back of the net via the left hand post.

The Yellows now moved up into top gear as the rain start to subside, some lovely passing and quick thinking 1-2’s resulted in three more good goals in the final 10 minutes. Sam Brown completed his hat-trick after great work from Joe Creasey and Max Hubbard. Max Hubbard then intercepted a goal clearance to coolly slot home. And a passage of play that saw the ball being switch from one flank to another was superbly finished off by Joe Creasey.

Great Gonerby Yellows started the weekend on a sad note as they said farewell to influential striker Liam Harper who has moved on to another club, but finished the weekend on a high with a good win against Bottesford.

After a scrappy opening 5 minutes, the Yellows got a foothold on the game when a well delivered corner by Joe Creasey, found man of the match Max Hubbard who slammed in the loose ball.

Bottesford response was immediate, winning a free-kick just outside the Yellows box which was well cleared by Bradley Flower. Bottesford continued to pressure winning a corner on the right, which Stefan Eardley did well on hold too.

The Yellows moved up a gear with a great piece of play down the left flank, Ryan Taggart's pass playing Max Hubbard into space, his slide rule pass set up Joe Creasey to rifle in his 9th of the season. It was 3-0 moments later when Luke Gorman’s defence splitting pass put Max Hubbard through to slot home.

The second half was only seconds old when the crowd were probably treated the Yellow’s goal of the season. Second half sub Sam Browns long clearance found Max Hubbard well out on the right, and with on other option, Max blasted the ball from all of 20 yards into the far corner giving the Bottesford keeper no chance.

Max Hubbard, still full of running made it 5-0 when his shot took a wicked deflection on its way into the back of the net.

The Yellows had to reshuffle their formation when Luke Gorman took a knock and had to come off, the resulting free-kick fell to Sam Brown, whose shot hit the post and Max Hubbard pounced on the loose ball for his 5th of the game.

With the Yellows a little exposed at the back Bottesford pulled 2 goals back in quick succession, the first an unfortunate own goal when the ball wasn’t cleared from a good corner and the second was a lovely move down the centre which the Bottesford striker put a way.

Harry Toon who had to be taken off moments earlier after a knock on the head sealed the game with a cool finish, sliding the ball passed the keeper after a bursting run from mid-field.

Yellows were punished for a host of missed chances against a strong skilful Barrowby team.

Despite early pressure from the Yellows with Max Hubbard, Joe Creasey and Sam Brown going close in the open minutes, the Yellows were caught out by a long Barrowby defensive clearance which was hit home by the quick Barrowby striker. From the resulting restart Ryan Taggart had to be alert to intercept a probing pass from the Barrowby midfield.

Just before the stoke of half time the Yellows pulled a goal back when Liam Harpers corner found Max Hubbard unmarked, his shot was blocked but fell to Joe Creasey who slammed the ball in to the far corner.

The second half started in the same vain as the first with the Yellows having a number of great opportunities, the Barrowby keeper doing well to keep out shots from Harry Toon, and Joe Creasey. Man of the match Luke Gorman continued to work tirelessly and was at the centre of every Yellows move. The Yellows continued to press and lovely move involving Bradley Flower and Harry Toon put Max Hubbard into space but his fierce drive just whistled over the bar. The resulting goal kick caught the Yellows cold and Barrowby regained the lead. With 10 minutes left to play Stephan Eardly was alert to tip the ball round the post from a good Barrowby shot. Yellows fell further behind as they fail to clear the resulting Barrowby corner as the Barrowby striker buried the loose ball.

Gonerby Yellows suffered their first defeat of the season to the hands of second place Ketton Juniors and saw their lead cut to 8 points at the top of the table.

The Yellows found the Ketton Juniors keeper in inspired form as he made several great saves.

The opening exchanges set the tempo of the game, with end to end football and hard tackling in midfield. Both Joe Creasey and Liam Harper tested the Keeton defence early on with a couple of excellent in swinging corners. At the other end Stephan Eardley had be on hand as early as the 5th minute when he saved well from a ferocious drive from outside the box. Both man of the match Bradley Flower and Luke Gorman continued to repel the dangerous Ketton attacks with last ditch tackles. Ketton started to look sharper and the momentum of the game changed as Ketton broke down the middle and a loose ball fell to the Kentton forward who smashed home.

Great work from Harry Toon set Max Hubbard free, but his shot was pushed on to the post by the Ketton keeper as the first half came to a close.

The second half started better for the Yellows as they started to use the width of the pitch better, but disaster struck as Ketton broke from a quick throw which could only be cleared into the path of the Ketton striker who made no mistake from 5 yards.

Yellows now started to pressure and Sam Brown’s run from deep was halted by a foul just outside of the Ketton box. The resulting free kick was hammered in by Liam Harper and just as the crowd thought the ball was going into the top left hand corner, the keeper pulled off a wonder save to push the ball on to the cross bar and away to safety.

With the clock ticking down the Yellows pushed Luke Gorman forward, which allowed Max Hubbard to loose his marker and given just that extra yard of space he fired in low from the edge of the box, to pull one back. Yellows continued to pressure but the last chances came and went as Sam Brown’s left wing run and cross from the by-line failed to find a free Yellows shirt.

2008 started with a bang for the Gonerby Yellows with a convincing display against a spirited Ponton side.

The Yellows first came after the Ponton goal keeper could only parry Sam Brown’s fierce shot in to the path of Max Hubbard. Yellows were 2-0 up only a few minutes later after a great defensive clearance from Bradley Flower was flicked on by Sam Brown and Max Hubbard coolly slotted home.

Man of the Match Liam Harper got his first of 6 goals, after pouncing on a Ponton goal kick and beating 2 defenders to fire into the far corner.

The Yellows continue to pressure winning a series of corners which profited them 4 good goals. The first from a quick corner by Joe Creasy found Liam Harper with time to pick his spot and fire home, the second when Luke Gorman pass allowed Liam Harper to fire into the corner from a tight angle, the third when a Liam Harper’s curling corner beat everyone to end up in the net and the fourth when Max Hubbard met Liam Harpers corner to tap home.

Yellows wrapped up the first half with the goal of the game. Joe Creasey broke down the right wing and floated in a prefect cross which Max Hubbard slid in.

The second half saw Ponton playing down the slope and they immediately forced the Yellows onto the back foot, with Ryan Taggart clearing well and Stefan Eardley making a great save from a fierce Ponton shot. The resulting goal kick played Joe Creasey into space on the left wing and his cross was turned in by Liam Harper. Second half sub Harry Toon deflected shot sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 10. He then got his second, after great work by Luke Gorman.

Yellows went into the winter break maintaining their 100% record and extending their lead at the top of the table too 8 points with a hard working victory against Barrowby.

In freezing conditions and on a hard pitch both teams stuck to their natural passing game which made for a good spectacle. Yellows decided to play a 2-3-1 formation using the pacey midfielders, Sam Brown, Joe Creasey and Liam Harper to stretch the play down the flanks.

With the Liam Harper man marking the strong Barrowby midfielder the Yellows dominated for the early part of the game and were rewarded after a Joe Creasey played Max Hubbard in down the right, his well weighted cross was met by Sam Brown who ghosted in at the far post to score his ninth of the season.

Yellows continued to press with both Liam Harper and Joe Creasey causing the Barrowby defence problems with some dangerous corners.

Good defensive work from Ryan Taggart and Bradley Fowler managed to keep Barrowby at bay as they began to threaten with quick breaks down the middle. Stefan Eardley made a crucial save at his near post as the Barrowby striker had a clear shot on goal.

The Yellows made it 2 nil, after Ryan Taggart and Bradley Flower broke up a promising Barrowby move, with the Yellows midfield breaking in numbers the Barrowby defence was stretched, Max Hubbard slide rule pass gave man of the match Liam Harper time to fire pass the Barrowby keeper into the far corner.

The Yellows extended their lead on the stroke of half time as again they stretched the play from one wing to the other, this time Max Hubbard wiping in a low cross for Joe Creasey, who hit the post minutes earlier, to fire in with a low shot from the edge of the box.

Second half subs Luke Gorman and Harry Toon made an immediate impact as the Yellows started to control the game, Harry Toon going close with a trade-mark flying header, and Luke Gorman having a goal bound shot cleared.

Max Hubbard wrapped up the points after charging down a Barrowby defensive clearance to make 4 nil.

Barrowby scored a consolation with 5 minutes to go, but the Yellow’s heads didn’t drop and they were unlucky not to add to the score as Sam Brown had a shot that just flew over the bar and Harry Toon had a shot well saved.

Quote from the Coach; Excellent football boys, you all worked really hard. The pitch was difficult and it was really cold, but you stuck to your passing game and scored some lovely goals.

Have a good Christmas and we will see you in the New Year for training – Saturday 12th January 2008.

The Yellows maintained their 100% record and cemented their lead at the top of the table with a 2-1 win over the Grantham Flames, but they had to work hard for the victory as a much changed Flames side made it a real closely fought battle.

The Yellows were first off the blocks forcing a series of corners, but were unable to convert any of the chances that fell. The Flames showed their potential as they continuously caught the Yellows out with quick breaks from deep. It was from one of these breaks that the Flames went a head after forcing a corner on the left. The corner was well struck and Flames Adam Ackins was first to the loose ball as the Yellows failed to clear.

Minutes later the Yellows could have been two down if it hadn’t been for an excellent last ditch tackle from Bradley Flower as again the Flames broke with pace.

Max Hubbard hit the bar as the Yellows then started to dominate the first half, keeping the Flames camped in their half for long periods. The Yellows had a number of more chances with Luke Gorman and Joe Creasey both going close.

Eventually the Yellows pulled level as a quickly taken throw-in from Joe Creasey allowed Sam Brown to loose his marker and his driving run into the box was reward by beating the Flames keeper at his near post with a well struck shot.

The Yellows continued to pressure in the second half creating a number of chances, Luke Gorman beautifully controlling a loose ball from a corner and side stepping his marker to shoot agonisingly wide. Luke Gorman then turned provider with an excellent run down the right wing beating two defenders and wiping in an excellent ball which Liam Harper and Max Hubbard were unable to connect with. Harry Toon with a clever dummy burst down the right and played in Liam Harper, but his shot curled just round the right hand post.

As the game started into its final period, the Yellows found it difficult to maintain their passing game and the Flames sensing an opportunity to steal a victory started to press. With only a few minutes to go the game turned on 2 key moments; the flames won the ball from a Yellows corner and played a long ball over the Yellows defence, the Flames striker was clean through when Stefan Eardley pulled off a great save. Then from a Flames corner Ryan Taggart’s clearance found man of the match Joe Creasey in centre midfield and his ball spit the Flames defence which Max Hubbard latched on too, his pace took him away from his marker and he drove home with a cool finish.

Quote from the Coach; Well play boys, that was a hard game, the Flames were much better than last week, we showed excellent spirit to come from behind. We must learn not drop our heads if we concede and early goal, there is plenty of time to get back into the game.

The Yellows made it eight straight wins after beating the Gonerby Blues 4 nil.

An improving Blues side never allowed the Yellows to settle. Although Yellows took the lead from a Liam Harper shot, the Blues nearly equalised after Ricardo Alves shot was turned on to the post by a good save from Stefan Eardly. Bradley Flower had to be alert to clear the danger again as the Blues continued to press. The Yellows then went further a head after a nice move down the left flank involving Ryan Taggart and Luke Gorman played Max Hubbard into space to fire home. The Blues nearly got back into the game as Braden Wakerley was unlucky not to score with a fierce drive from outside the penalty area.

The second half saw chances at both ends, but a series of Yellows corners eventually found Joe Creasey in space and his shot squeezed just inside the right hand post to make it 3 nil. The Yellows started find more time on the ball as the Blues team started to tire, but excellent Blues goalkeeping from Elliot Turner kept a series of shots out from Sam Brown, Luke Gorman and Max Hubbard until a lovely lay-off from Harry Toon gave man of the match Sam Brown time to pick his spot to score from the edge of the area.

But the Yellows took control of the game when the Reds failed to clear a long throw from Harry Toon and Max Hubbard turned the loose ball home.

The Yellows defence of Stefan Eardley and Ryan Taggart continued to hold as the Reds began to pressure looking for the equaliser from a series of corners just before half time.

The second half started well for the Yellows as Joe Creasey whipped in a fierce corner which via a deflection beat everyone to end up in the back of the net. The Yellows then began to dominate and a pin point cross from Luke Gorman allowed Max Hubbard to tap in his 19th goal of the season. Substitute Sam Brown then hit the Reds post with a shot from outside the box, before man of the match Harry Toon wrapped up the game with a good solo run and shot.
